On Wednesday, the Hellenic Police released new public information videos showcasing key elements and philosophies behind their domestic violence prevention and response initiatives.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis emphasised the need for women to overcome fear, asserting that only the perpetrators should fear arrest.

Since 2019, tackling domestic violence has been a top priority for the Citizen Protection Ministry and the Hellenic Police. The creation of the first domestic abuse task force in November 2019 marked the beginning of a comprehensive and targeted network of services. Reports of domestic violence incidents have more than doubled since early 2020, reflecting the effectiveness of the state’s response mechanisms.

Significant measures include training over 17,000 police officers nationwide and prioritising domestic violence cases. The Panic Button system has been extended nationwide, safe house areas have been established in every police department, and a comprehensive police response code of conduct has been implemented.

Key developments include the establishment of six Operational Domestic Violence Offices in 2021 and 12 more in 2022, the introduction of the Panic Button tool, and the recent addition of 45 new Operational Offices in June 2024. These efforts have resulted in a significant increase in reported incidents and arrests, with 7,494 incidents and 4,409 arrests in the first five months of 2024 alone.

The Hellenic Police have also created a public guide outlining victims’ rights and police obligations and designed an anonymous police response evaluation form for victims. These initiatives aim to ensure that no victim feels unprotected.
