UN agencies have strongly criticised Greece for its lack of progress in investigating a tragic migrant shipwreck that occurred a year ago in the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people.
The UNHCR and IOM emphasised the urgent need for a thorough and conclusive investigation into the incident, which occurred on June 14, 2023, near southern Greece.
Despite initial investigations being launched by Greek authorities, no definitive findings have been communicated thus far, leaving many questions unanswered. The sinking of the Adriana, a dilapidated fishing boat carrying up to 750 migrants from Libya to Italy, resulted in the loss of nearly all onboard, with only 104 survivors.
Criticism has been leveled at the Greek coast guard's handling of the situation, particularly concerning allegations that attempts to tow the vessel led to its sinking. Rights groups and migrant charities have echoed calls for accountability, stressing the importance of justice for survivors and the families of victims.
As protests were planned in Athens and other cities, international pressure mounted on Greece to ensure a credible investigation to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Despite calls for transparency, Greek officials had not issued any statements regarding the anniversary of the shipwreck by early afternoon on Friday.
