Hillsborough Deputy Hailed as Hero After Recovering from Gunfight with Greek American Murderous Teen

TAMPA, Fla. - A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy is recovering at home after a courageous stand against a violent teenager. Deputy Shane McGough was shot in the leg during a weekend incident that left a young man dead and his parents tragically murdered.

The harrowing events unfolded on Saturday night when Rebecca Ann Themelis called 911, reporting her husband had been shot. The situation quickly escalated as additional gunfire erupted within the residence.

Responding to Chaos

Responding officers, including Deputy McGough, arrived to find Ms Themelis outside with her son, Christos Alexander Themelis Jr. Body camera footage released by the Sheriff's office shows Deputy McGough attempting to de-escalate the situation. The footage captures him calmly ordering the suspect to keep his hands up.

Tragedy and Bravery

Despite Deputy McGough's efforts, the situation took a horrific turn. Christos Jr. fatally shot his mother and opened fire on the deputies, striking McGough in the leg.

Sheriff Chad Chronister commended Deputy McGough's bravery, stating, "Without our deputy's quick and skilful response, an entire neighbourhood could have been in danger."

The body camera footage reveals Deputy McGough calling for medical attention after being hit. Fellow officers heroically pulled him from the line of fire while engaging the suspect in a shootout. Christos Jr. retreated into the house and barricaded himself.

The SWAT team entered the residence and found the suspect deceased from his injuries.

Troubled Past, Unanswered Questions

Authorities revealed that Christos Jr. had a history of violence and mental health concerns. A risk protection order had been obtained in March, resulting in the confiscation of his firearms. However, investigators are now looking into how he was able to acquire a weapon again.

Community Hero on the Mend

Deputy McGough underwent surgery for his leg wound and is expected to make a full recovery. Upon his release from the hospital, he was greeted by cheering colleagues.

Sheriff Chronister expressed his gratitude for Deputy McGough's actions, stating, "Deputy Shane McGough's courage and resilience exemplify the dedication and bravery of all our deputies."

This tragic incident underscores the bravery of law enforcement officers who risk their lives to protect communities. It also highlights the importance of addressing mental health concerns and implementing effective gun control measures.
