Archbishop Theodosios Atallah (Hanna), head of the Sebastian Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, has called on world leaders to halt Israel’s actions in Gaza, denouncing some as complicit.
"When we talk about the West, unfortunately, there are leaders who are complicit in this attack. The weapons and missiles striking our people in Gaza are produced in the US and other places," Hanna told Anadolu.
He highlighted that within Western countries, there are individuals who oppose the Zionist ideal, including university students, academics, and intellectuals of various faiths.
Hanna believes that the suffering in Gaza will lead to greater global awareness and potentially influence fairer policies. "Awareness is increasing, and I hope this global understanding will lead to more just decisions, not just military action," he added.
Gaza War is Exceptional
Hanna emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Gaza cannot be considered a typical war. "This is ethnic cleansing, a massacre; it is a conspiracy against the Palestinian people and their cause," he asserted.
He pointed out that Gaza, under blockade for two decades, faces its sixth major conflict, the most intense and terrifying yet.
The Tragedy in Gaza Defies Words
Describing the situation as a profound tragedy, Hanna spoke of the lives lost, families displaced, and the destruction of homes and places of worship. "Words cannot express the magnitude of this devastation," he lamented.
Hanna affirmed the solidarity of Palestinian Christians with their people, highlighting the historical churches in Gaza dating back to the 4th century AD.
Appeal for Peace and Freedom
"As Palestinian Christians, we share the suffering and aspirations of our people. We pray for divine intervention to aid Gaza," he said.
As Eid al-Adha approached, Hanna drew attention to Gaza's plight during the celebration. "Eid has arrived amidst tragic circumstances in Gaza," he noted.
He affirmed their steadfastness despite suffering, saying, "We endure pain but do not lose hope. We are the rightful owners of this just cause, these sacred lands."
Ending the Bloodshed
Hanna expressed the primary wish of Greek Orthodox Christians for an end to the war and the suffering it has caused. He commended efforts to halt the attacks and urged their continuation until peace is achieved.
"We want the Palestinian issue resolved, with freedom and independence for the Palestinian people," he declared.
Appeal to All Religions
Hanna extended his appeal beyond Christians, calling on Muslims, Jews, and people of all faiths to defend Palestine. "When you defend Palestine, you defend your humanity, your religion, and your values," he stated.
He reminded Christians worldwide that defending Palestine is the birthplace of Christianity, emphasizing its historical and religious significance.
Urging Global Voices
Hanna concluded with a plea for global action to end hostilities, stressing the unjust suffering of Gaza's people. "The people of Gaza are civilized, educated, and deserve better," he affirmed. "We demand an immediate end to this war."
