According to a recent report from INSETE, Greece’s tourism research body under SETE, the US, Australia, and Canada are identified as key long-haul markets poised to significantly increase visitor arrivals to Greece over the next year.

The findings, based on data from GlobalWebIndex (GWI) collected in early 2024, indicate growing interest among travellers from these countries, alongside China and India, in choosing Greece for their holidays.

Historically, long-haul tourists have contributed around 11 per cent of Greece’s inbound tourism revenues, with the latest insights positioning Greece favourably among the Top 15 destinations for travellers from these distant markets.

Specifically, Greece ranked 10th among Australians, 11th among Canadians, and 12th among Americans in terms of preferred overseas destinations. In contrast, Greece stood 33rd in China and 39th in India.

Looking ahead, a significant percentage of potential travellers from these markets express intent to journey abroad within the next year, with Americans, Canadians, Chinese, Indians, and Australians showing considerable interest. The study highlights evolving preferences among these travellers, emphasizing a growing attraction towards sightseeing, nature experiences, and leisure pursuits alongside traditional sea and sun activities.

Moreover, there is a notable inclination towards longer vacations, with a substantial portion of travellers from the US, Canada, and Australia planning trips lasting seven days or more. Financially, travellers from these regions anticipate higher expenditures on their travels, with estimated nightly expenditures per person, including accommodations and taxes, ranging from $110 for Americans to varying percentages for Canadians, Australians, and Chinese travellers.
