Eurostat Report: Greece Shows Preference for US Dollar in Extra-EU Trade in 2023

In 2023, the US dollar emerged as the dominant currency for extra-EU exports of goods in Greece, comprising 54% of transactions, according to recent data.

This preference for the US dollar in Greek exports contrasts with the broader trend across the European Union, where the euro led in most countries.

The euro, however, maintained a significant role, accounting for 41% of Greece's extra-EU exports. This dual currency usage reflects Greece's economic ties with both the EU and international markets, with the US dollar favoured in over half of the export transactions.

Across the EU, the euro remained the primary currency for exports in 19 out of 27 member states, with particularly high adoption rates in countries like Slovenia, Croatia, and Latvia. Conversely, the US dollar dominated export transactions in six countries, including Cyprus, Ireland, and Greece.

For imports, the US dollar continued to hold sway in Greece, representing 64% of extra-EU imports in 2023. This aligns with Finland and Lithuania, where the US dollar also commanded a significant share of import transactions.

The data underscores Greece's dual currency dynamics in international trade, reflecting its strategic position and economic relationships both within the EU and globally.
