Heilung: The Germanic pagan folk band will perform in Athens on Oct 12!

Their music has been featured in the series Vikings and a trailer for Game of Thrones.

Heilung, an experimental pagan folk band from Denmark, Norway, and Germany, will perform in Athens on October 12 at Lycabettus Theatre.

For those who don't recognise them at first listen, their music has featured on highly successful, legendary TV productions, such as the series "Vikings" and "Game of Thrones", as well as video games-mega hits ("Conqueror's Blade VII: Wolves of Ragnarök", "Senua's Saga: Hellblade II" and Robert Eggers' blockbuster "The Northman").

The band was founded in 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark by vocalist Kai Uwe Faust (a German tattoo artist who specialises in Old Norse tattoos) and Danish producer Christopher Juul. Today, with Maria Franz of Norway, the band has recorded three albums to date, with the latest, 'Drif,' released in 2022.

They describe their music, based on ancient texts and runic inscriptions of old Germanic civilisations and folklore, as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe."

Here, "amplified " refers to the archaic power unleashed by the band's amplifiers...

To produce their unique sound, Heilung used musical instruments and objects already known from the Iron Age, such as percussion, bones, and even spears. They also use horns, bells, and even a reconstructed silver cup from the Viking Age.

The elaborate costumes they wear on stage, which are primarily based on "spiritual traditions of the Eurasian circumpolar peoples", or which at other times are historically faithful replicas of Norse Bronze Age clothing, are torn apart by performers during live shows.

Through the use of many different languages ​​(Latin, Germanic, Celtic, Gothic, early Germanic dialects, and more), Heilung explores musically, lyrically, and poetically the magic of the ancient culture and traditions of the northern Eurasian peoples.

In their latest work, they advance a step further, incorporating elements from traditions beyond this geographical and cultural area.

Heilungs' work reminds us that nothing ever came from nothing, and no culture is a product of parthenogenesis. Everyone and everything owes everything to everyone and everything. We are in the realm of co-belonging, and borders of all kinds are illusory.
