The incident occurred during a sudden summer rainstorm at Faros beach, near Poseidi in the Halkidiki region, a popular resort area southeast of Thessaloniki.
According to Kassandreia mayor Anastasia Halkia, the girl had been swimming with her parents when they decided to come out of the water as it had just started to rain. However, the weather quickly took a turn for the worse, with Halkia describing "a lot of lightning" in the area.
"It's the kind of summer storm that usually doesn't cause any trouble," the mayor noted.
Despite the family's efforts to seek shelter, the 13-year-old girl was struck by lightning and seriously injured. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically could not be saved, and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The girl's parents were unharmed in the incident.
