Siljanovska Provokes Again with "Macedonians of the Aegean" - How the Greek Foreign Ministry Responded

The leadership of North Macedonia continues to violate the Prespa Agreement and is now returning to actions of the past that indicate irredentist intentions and a complete disregard for history, the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement, responding to new provocative statements by the country's president, Gordana Siljanovska, who continues to test Athens' patience with successive and escalating provocations.

Thus, after the "games" (here) with the name of her country (and the arbitrary use of "Macedonia" alone), Siljanovska remembered the "Macedonians of the Aegean", in a practical revival of the rhetoric of irredentism, blatantly disregarding the spirit and letter of the Prespa Agreement (note: the revival of irredentism and the raising, even indirectly, of minority issues on both sides of the border, constitutes a violation of the specific provisions of the Agreement).

According to a statement from the Presidency in Skopje, Siljanovska met with representatives of the "Children of Refugees from Aegean Macedonia" and discussed with them the celebrations for the 75 years since the "expulsion of the Macedonians of the Aegean".

"The fate and tragedy of the 30,000 refugee children and their ordeal must not be silenced or relativized," she said, adding to her rant by pointing out that respect and knowledge of the past "gives a lot of room for a friendly future that we are striving for the good of all in the Balkans and Europe."

The meeting took place ahead of the irredentist events that take place every year on June 30 for the anniversary of the "expulsion of the Aegean Macedonians" from "Aegean Macedonia".

The following is the announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to the new provocation by the President of the neighbouring country:

The leadership of North Macedonia continues to violate the Prespa Agreement. Moreover, it is returning to actions of the past that indicate irredentist intentions and a complete disregard for history.

The Greek Foreign Minister has already brought these violations to the attention of his counterparts at the Foreign Affairs Council and will continue to do so.

Furthermore, the issue is being raised at the international level by the Greek Government. The leadership of North Macedonia is moving further and further away from the relations of good neighborliness that are at the heart of the European acquis and international law.
