Fire Engulfs Andros, Greece Remains at High Fire Risk

A fire is currently raging in Andros, Greece, specifically in the Agios Petros region.

Fire Department Update:

The Fire Department reports that the fire ignited amidst low vegetation in the Agios Petros area. Currently, 15 firefighters are battling the blaze with 5 vehicles and 1 fire engine deployed to the scene.

High Fire Risk Persists Across Greece:

The risk of fire remains very high (Category 4) for Sunday, June 30, 2024, across several regions in Greece, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection. These regions include:

  • Attica (including Kythira island)
  • Peloponnese (specifically Corinthia, Argolis, and Laconia)
  • Crete
  • North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, and Ikaria)
  • South Aegean (Cyclades)
  • Central Greece (Boeotia, Fthiotida, and Evia)

Authorities in these regions are on high alert and prepared for immediate response to fire incidents.

Public Urged to Exercise Extreme Caution:

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection emphasizes the need for extreme caution and urges citizens to avoid any activities that could spark a fire, particularly in open areas. These include:

  • Burning: Refrain from burning dry grass, branches, or agricultural debris.
  • Machinery Use: Avoid using machinery prone to sparking, such as circular saws and welding equipment.
  • Outdoor Cooking and Smoking: Exercise extreme care when using outdoor grills and refrain from smoking bees.
  • Discarding Cigarettes: Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and disposed of properly.

Field burning remains strictly prohibited during the fire protection season.
