Arson Arrests Surge in Greece Amid Escalating Wildfire Crisis

An individual was apprehended for arson in Rafina on June 16 and subsequently released. However, on June 30, the same person was detained again on an identical charge and will appear in Athens on charges.

The Greek Fire Department arrested three individuals for fires in Salamis, Rafina, and Poros and fined four others.

In more detail:

  • A person was arrested yesterday, June 29, 2024, as part of the on-the-spot procedure by investigating officers of DI.PY. Piraeus, a Greek citizen, for a fire that occurred in low vegetation, in violation of current legislation, in the area of Risti, Salamis, and was fined 1,500 euros.
  • On June 30, 2024, a foreign individual was apprehended by the Nea Makri Fire Department's investigating officers as part of an immediate action for deliberately starting a fire in a grassland area near the Rafina stream in Attica. The individual has been fined 8,538.75 euros. Previously arrested for the same offence on June 16, 2024, and receiving a suspended sentence, the person was presented to the Athens Misdemeanor Attorney today and is scheduled to testify before the Investigator on Tuesday morning.
  • A person was arrested today, June 30, 2024, as part of the on-the-spot procedure, by investigating officers of the Eth. Fire. Poros, with the assistance of the Hellenic Police, a Greek citizen, who proceeded to perform hot works in violation of current legislation in the area of Askel, Poros, Municipality of Poros, Attica. He was fined 3,000 euros.
  • An administrative fine of 1,933 euros was imposed yesterday, June 29, 2024, by investigating officers of DI.PY.N. Ioannina, on a Greek citizen who proceeded to outdoor work causing a fire within a residential area, in violation of current legislation, in the Municipality of Ioannina, in Ioannina.
  • An administrative fine of 2,250 euros was imposed yesterday, June 29, 2024, by investigating officers of P.K. Thassos, on a foreigner who proceeded to use an improvised cooking device in an outdoor area, in violation of current legislation, in the area of Skala Potamias on the island of Thassos.
  • Today, June 30, 2024, DI.PY.N. Thessaloniki's investigating officers imposed an administrative fine of 2,250 euros on a Greek citizen for burning waste within a residential area. This act was in contravention of the prevailing laws and occurred in the Halara settlement, within the Delta Municipality of Thessaloniki.
  • Today, June 30, 2024, investigating officers from P.Y. Pyrgos issued an administrative fine of 2,625 euros to a Greek citizen for burning waste in a residential area. This act was in contravention of the prevailing laws in the Arvaniti community, within the Municipality of Pyrgos, Ilia.
