Greece Approves Purchase of F-35A Jets and Participation in Constellation Frigate Program

The Greek Parliamentary Armaments Commission has approved a plan to procure 20 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets and explore involvement in the Constellation-type frigate construction program.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias presented these initiatives to the Commission, emphasizing to the Greek State Agency AMNA that the acquisition of F-35 aircraft would bolster the nation's defence capabilities. He also underscored the strategic importance of participating in the Constellation frigate program to enhance the operational strength of the Hellenic Navy.

On January 27, 2024, the United States authorized the sale of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets to Turkey and F-35A Lightning II fighter jets to Greece. The approved sale to Greece comprises 40 F-35A fighter jets and associated systems, totalling $8.6 billion. These jets are intended to replace the ageing F-4 and Mirage-2000 aircraft in the Greek Air Force.

The Constellation-class frigates, developed by Fincantieri Marinette Marine for the U.S. Navy and based on the Italian FREMM frigates, are currently under construction with the lead ship, USS Constellation (FFG-62). These warships measure 151 meters in length, 19.8 meters in width, with a draft of 7.3 meters and a displacement of 7,300 tons. They are powered by a CODLAG propulsion system combining diesel-electric and gas turbines, capable of speeds exceeding 28 knots and accommodating a crew of 200.

Equipped with a 32-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launch System, the Constellation-class frigates can deploy a variety of missiles, including ESSM, SM-2, and SM-6. They also feature a 57mm Mk 110 Mod 0 gun and the capability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Dendias' proposals for the acquisition of F-35 jets and participation in the Constellation frigate program received majority approval from the Commission.
