The number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 has nearly doubled since the end of May, reversing the downward trend seen during the same period in 2023, according to epidemiology professor and National Public Health Organisation scientific committee member Gkikas Magiorkinis.

Speaking to AMNA radio, Magiorkinis noted that this increase occurred four to five weeks earlier compared to last summer, suggesting a potential continued rise in virus circulation.

While it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, Magiorkinis reassured that the current situation is not expected to overwhelm the healthcare system. He attributed the rise in cases to new FLiRT strains of the virus, which are more easily transmitted outdoors. He advised vulnerable individuals to take precautions in crowded areas, test if symptoms arise, and seek prompt treatment with antiviral medication.

COVID-19 remains the most significant infection currently, Magiorkinis emphasised. He recommended that vulnerable groups, including those over 60-65 years old, receive an annual booster shot, and in some cases, two. For those under 60 without health issues, there is no current recommendation for a booster shot.
