Police Investigate Stabbing at University of Sydney, Suspect's Motive Unclear

Sydney, Australia - Police are investigating a stabbing incident that occurred Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at the University of Sydney, leaving a 22-year-old student hospitalized.

A 14-year-old boy dressed in military camouflage clothing was arrested at the scene after allegedly stabbing the student in the neck. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect sustained cuts during the incident and was treated at a hospital before being held for a mental health assessment. According to Acting Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton of the New South Wales Police, the suspect's motive remains unclear.

"A motive or ideology importantly has not been determined at this time," Walton stated in a press conference.

While the New South Wales Joint Counterterrorism Committee is involved in the investigation, authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

Walton further clarified that the attack "is certainly not a religiously related" and that the suspect's ideology appears to be "mixed and unclear." A kitchen knife, believed to have been used in the attack, was recovered at the scene.
