This June was the warmest in Greece since 2010

This June was characterised by many consecutive days with large positive temperature deviations.

The average value of maximum daily temperatures in June this year fluctuated throughout the country at extremely high levels compared to the average of the 2010-2019 period.

According to the METEO network of 53 meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA), last month was characterised by many consecutive days with large positive temperature deviations and was the warmest June since 2010.

Central Greece and the Peloponnese recorded the largest positive temperature deviations, with average monthly values ​​ranging up to 4.8 °C above normal levels for the season.

For all geographical divisions of the country, June 2024 was an extremely warm month, the warmest since 2010, with mean values ​​for the month almost 2-3°C above the second warmest (June 2012).

Very large positive deviations were noted throughout the country in the first fortnight, mainly in Central Greece, Peloponnese, and Crete on June 10-13. They were 10-12°C above the normal levels for the season (44.5°C in Voukolies of Chania on June 13, 2024).

Small negative deviations were noted only in the Aegean islands after the 20th of the month.

In addition to the many consecutive days with positive deviations, absolute maximum temperature records were also broken at eleven METEO stations since the start of their operations.

In Athens, the average monthly maximum temperature deviation value was +4.0 °C, with 29 of the 30 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season.

In Thessaloniki, 28 days of the month were warmer than the average value of the period 2010-2019, where the average maximum temperature of the month fluctuated +2.6 °C above normal levels.

In 70% of the climate stations, at least 29 days out of the 30th of the month were warmer than usual.
