The project, backed by the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, is aimed at boosting the country’s space capabilities and driving economic growth.
The constellation will consist of seven microsatellites equipped with advanced cameras capable of capturing high-resolution images and data. This information will be utilised for a wide range of applications, including disaster prevention, environmental monitoring, agriculture, and maritime surveillance.
“This project is a significant step forward for Greece’s space ambitions,” said Dimitris Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance. “It will not only enhance our ability to address critical challenges but also create new economic opportunities and jobs.”
Rafel Jorda Siquier, Founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, expressed pride in securing the contract and emphasised the company’s commitment to expanding its operations in Greece. Open Cosmos is establishing a new office and factory near Athens to support the project and serve both domestic and international markets.
Applications:
- Natural Disaster Prevention & Monitoring: Provides data for effective decision-making and planning by emergency services.
- Maritime, Ocean, and Coastal Monitoring: Tracks maritime pollution, oil spills, and extreme weather events.
- Climate Change Impact Assessment: Monitors changes in land use and crop health, supporting evidence-based policymaking.
- Renewable Energy Planning: Assesses viability and monitors installations of solar and wind farms.
- Agriculture and Forestry Monitoring: Optimizes land management practices and policies for food security and environmental sustainability.
This project will boost Greece's space capabilities, drive economic and societal benefits, and enhance collaboration with European partners to address shared challenges, with an estimated €116 million in Greek economic output by 2033 through exports and commercialisation of satellite data.
