Stefanos Tsitsipas secured a victorious start at Wimbledon, defeating Taro Daniel (World No. 84) in straight sets (7-6, 6-4, 7-5) in their first-round match.
The Greek champion will face the winner of the Emil Ruusuvuori vs Mackenzie McDonald match in the next round.
Tsitsipas concluded the match with 15 aces, saving 6 out of 7 break points he faced. He maintained control throughout most of the match.
Tsitsipas started strong, defending his serve and breaking in the fourth game to take a 4-1 lead. However, Daniel capitalized on Tsitsipas’ subsequent errors and went on a 3-0 run to level the score at 4-4. Both players held serve until the tie-break, where the Greek player displayed greater focus, winning the first set 7-6.
In the second set, Tsitsipas was more efficient, securing a break in the third game and holding his serve to take a two-set lead with a score of 6-4.
The third set remained balanced until the 11th game when Tsitsipas’ experience proved decisive. He secured a crucial break and closed out the set 7-5, securing a 3-0 victory after approximately two and a half hours.
