Across the European Union, a market share analysis revealed significant shifts in the dominance of major energy companies. Between 2021 and 2022, the largest electricity producer in Greece experienced reduced market presence, aligning with similar trends observed in 16 other EU countries. This decline underscores a trend towards greater market diversification and competition.
During the same period, Greece's largest natural gas importer and producer also reported a decrease in market share, in line with 11 other EU nations. Conversely, some countries such as Slovakia and Croatia saw modest increases in market share for their largest natural gas companies.
In specific comparisons, Greece ranked among the EU countries with lower levels of market penetration for natural gas imports and production, with the largest company holding 30.5% of the market share. This contrasts with countries like Malta and Sweden, where a single entity dominated with 100% market share, and Poland with 92.0%.
