The bills, titled "Ratification of the Settlement between the Government of the Hellenic Republic and the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia related to the status of Hellenic Armed Forces on the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" and "Ratification of the Agreement of Military Cooperation between the Hellenic Republic and the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," received opposition from the Communist Party of Greece, Elliniki Lysi, Niki, Nea Aristera, Spartiates, and Plefsi Eleftherias.
Deputy National Defense Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis highlighted Greece's strategic position linking Southeastern Europe, the Black Sea, the Middle East, and Northeastern Africa. He emphasised the need for strengthened defenses and enhanced arms protection due to this geopolitical advantage.
Kefalogiannis stated, "Our country recognises Saudi Arabia's prominent role in the Gulf Cooperation Council and the broader Middle East region. Therefore, we are proceeding with strategic decisions to deepen and establish our defense cooperation," citing joint exercises, participation in defence industries, and information exchange as key components.
Opposition parties expressed concerns over costs, involvement in regional conflicts, and the potential impact on Greece's national defence capabilities by exporting armaments.
