Australian star Thanasi Kokkinakis was forced to retire from his Wimbledon second-round match against Lucas Pouille after suffering a heartbreaking knee injury on Friday morning.
Kokkinakis, who had previously withdrawn from Queen's Club due to concerns over the same knee, appeared to slip and injure himself during the third set. The 28-year-old immediately clutched his left knee in visible pain.
After a medical timeout where his knee was taped and he received pain medication, Kokkinakis bravely attempted to continue. However, the pain proved too much, forcing him to concede the match to Pouille with the score at 2-6, 7-5, 5-2.
"I have to get some scans tomorrow to determine the severity," a devastated Kokkinakis told the ATP. "It feels similar to the injury I had at Queen's, but potentially worse. My initial goal was to play Atlanta after Wimbledon, but that depends on the MRI results."
Pouille will now face another Australian, Alex de Minaur, in the third round.
