The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, told SKAI 100.3 that up to 950 new buses will be on the streets of Athens by the end of 2025 and that the fleet in Thessaloniki will also be upgraded.
Staikouras revealed that 140 new electric buses are already on the streets of Athens and 110 in Thessaloniki, which are fully accessible to all citizens.
He announced that the audit conference approved two contracts under which private individuals, namely six bus companies and two tourist agencies, will circulate 211 new buses in Eastern and Western Attica within nine months at the latest, while another 300 gas buses are expected to be on the streets of the capital.
On fare evasion, he said that the number of ticket inspectors is being increased, noting that the goal is that every month, as more revenue is collected in the OSY from the checks, there will be announcements saying that this money will be returned to improving transportation for the benefit of citizens.
The minister also said that a project to modernise 14 trains on Metro Line 1 is underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
On the trains that do not have air conditioning, he said that the first priority is to find the €39 million to address the problem.
Mr Staikouras also noted that he and the Prime Minister have a personal commitment to finding the €59 million required to maintain and properly operate the elevators in the metro stations.
