Storms Spark Fires and Floods Across Greece

The Fire Brigade reported 62 fires breaking out in the past 24 hours, primarily due to lightning strikes during severe storms across Greece on Thursday.

Of these, 52 were quickly extinguished, while efforts continue to control the remaining 10. Civil Protection noted that eight fires erupted within a three-hour window in Sounion (Legrena), Villia, Lavrion, Dionyssos, Marathonas, Epidavros, Delphi, and Lesvos.

Aerial firefighting units were deployed in several areas, mainly forests, including Villia, Sounion, Lavrion, Dionyssos, Marathonas, Delphi, Epidavros, and Lesvos.

In addition to fires, the Fire Brigade received 86 calls related to flooding due to heavy rainfall and storms, particularly affecting Attica and Central Macedonia. Most calls were for water pumping operations, especially in Attica.

Civil Protection has issued recommendations for citizens to take self-protection measures during the severe weather. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has coordinated with state agencies, regions, and municipalities, placing them on high alert to ensure a swift and effective response to these weather-induced emergencies.
