A high-speed vessel carrying migrants was driven back towards the Turkish coast east of the island of Panagia while heading towards Chios.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the operator of the speedboat fired a gun at the Coast Guard vessel while simultaneously performing extremely dangerous maneuvers.
No injuries were reported from the shooting off the eastern Aegean Sea island of Chios, and a coast guard statement said that the smuggling vessel headed back towards the Turkish shore.
It said the man steering the speedboat opened fire on the patrol vessel with a handgun, adding that the coast guard crew “fired shots in a secure sector.”
A second patrol boat rushed to assist, and during the incident, shots were fired into a safe sector of the speedboat by the crew of the Coast Guard patrol boat.
