A massive fire that erupted in Patras on Tuesday afternoon has escalated to uncontrollable levels, fuelled by gale-force winds.

The blaze, which started in the Aroi area, has prompted the evacuation of several facilities, including the “Karamandaneio” Children’s Hospital, the “Konstantopouleio” nursing home, and the therapeutic and pedagogical centre “Merimna.”

Mayor Kostas Peletidis confirmed to OPEN that a house has been destroyed by the fire. He emphasised that significant efforts are being made to contain the flames, involving both ground and aerial firefighting units.

Explosions and Thick Smoke:
Residents have reported hearing explosions as the fire spread rapidly through the densely populated area. Thick smoke has enveloped the city centre, creating a suffocating atmosphere. The smoke has significantly impacted air quality, and visibility is severely reduced.

Fire Containment and Ongoing Threats:
Although the main fire front has been largely contained, numerous hotspots continue to pose a threat, leading to frequent reignitions. Firefighting forces remain actively engaged in the area to manage these outbreaks.

Emergency Alerts and Evacuations:
The emergency alert system has been activated, with 112 messages sent to residents in the Girokoioio, Aroi, and Pagona areas, advising them to evacuate. Specifically, residents of Girokoomeo have been directed to move to the Eglikada area, while those in Aroi and Pagona are advised to relocate to Patras.

Impact on Public Health Facilities:
The Karamandaneio Children’s Hospital has been directly impacted by the fire, with flames reaching the building. Emergency services have evacuated children and staff, transferring them to St. Andrew’s Hospital for safety. The Merimna Foundation and Konstantopouleio nursing home have also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Firefighting Operations:
