No Taxis in Attica Thursday: 24-Hour Strike Declared

Taxi drivers in Attica will be on a 24-hour strike starting at 6:00 am on Thursday, July 11th, and lasting until 6:00 am on Friday, July 12th. This announcement comes from the Attica Taxi Drivers Union (SATA).

"In a unanimous decision by all factions, the SATA Board of Directors has called for a 24-hour strike mobilizing Athens taxis," the statement reads. "Expressing the industry's outrage, we demand the immediate withdrawal of the controversial amendment proposed by the Ministry of Tourism."

"During an extraordinary meeting held on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024, at the Union's offices, the SATA Board of Directors unanimously decided on a 24-hour strike for Thursday, July 11th," the statement continues. "This coincides with the vote on the sell-off of the transport project promoted by the Ministry of Tourism in favor of private companies (EXs)."

"This action represents a global first," the statement emphasizes. "The proposed amendment aims to unlawfully prohibit the supervisory authorities from exercising their constitutionally mandated oversight over both drivers and passengers in these vehicles."

"The government has failed to understand the message delivered by the industry and the Greek people on June 9th," the statement concludes. "They relentlessly continue their efforts to dismantle the entire industry for the benefit of cartels. We are all in this fight together, defending our jobs, our livelihoods, and our future."

The government shows in every way its willingness to expropriate our profession by supporting oligopolies and multinationals in every way. It is up to us to let her know that we no longer tolerate the undermining practices she follows against our family peace and our professional dignity," the announcement concludes.
