THESSALONIKI, GREECE – July 9, 2024 – The Hellenic Initiative (THI), a global non-profit organization supporting Greece's economic development, has provided financial backing to open a new Odyssea Youth Center in Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city. This innovative facility expands Odyssea's successful model of training young people for careers in high-demand fields like tourism and construction, which are currently facing labor shortages.
Odyssea, a non-profit organization, empowers marginalized and vulnerable youth through tailored vocational and life-skills training combined with job placement services. Their network of 300 hiring partners provides crucial connections for participants, most of whom are aged 17-35 and include vulnerable women, people with disabilities, and others seeking to build a better future.
THI's support for Odyssea began with a win at the organization's Venture Impact Awards. This initial investment of over $160,000 has blossomed into a strategic partnership, generating jobs and hope for young Greeks.
Founded in 2012, THI connects Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece's economic recovery. Since its inception, THI has invested more than $22 million in programs promoting economic growth, job creation, and supporting impactful philanthropic organizations.
Odyssea, born in Athens in 2016, was founded by Jai Mexis and Loukas Oikonomakis with the mission of integrating marginalized people into society and breaking the cycle of unemployment. "We ensure young people have equal opportunities through knowledge-based training for jobs and personal development," said Mexis.
"THI's trust in our evidence-based, hands-on approach, fostering empowerment, not dependency, solidified our partnership," said Odyssea Development Program Manager Theodoris Kostoulas. "We shared our vision for the Thessaloniki Youth Center, and together, we're making it a reality."
The new centre caters to a younger demographic, offering courses and a friendly environment specifically designed for their needs.
"THI is proud to support Odyssea's vision of empowering young people to reach their full potential," said George P. Stamas, THI Board President.
THI Board Chairman Andrew N. Liveris added, "We partner with the most innovative and effective organizations. Odyssea beautifully connects the needs of employers and employees, creating a win-win situation."
