A 44-year-old man linked to organised crime on Mykonos has been arrested in connection with the recent murder of engineer/surveyor Panagiotis Stathis, 54, in Athens.
The suspect, apprehended on Wednesday, is expected to appear before an investigative magistrate on Thursday.
According to authorities, the suspect is implicated in a criminal racket involved in homicides, kidnappings – including that of shipowner Pericles Panagopoulos – extortion, and the placement of explosive devices. State broadcaster ERT reported that the suspect intends to argue during proceedings that neither murder weapon nor any substantial sum of money justifying the alleged actions have been found.
Meanwhile, investigators are focusing on examining the suspect’s confiscated mobile phones and bank accounts as the inquiry continues. Stathis was fatally shot outside his office in the Psychiko district of Athens. Police are investigating his professional activities, particularly on Mykonos, where he frequently worked, in order to establish a motive and identify potential accomplices.
Authorities have interviewed local officials and professionals on the island to gather information, including details on Stathis’s involvement in recent real estate transactions that may have disturbed certain circles.
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement determined to unravel the complexities surrounding the murder and its potential connections to organised crime activities both locally and on Mykonos.
