Australian Aircraft Reinforce Greece’s Firefighting Efforts

In a significant move to help Greece fight wildfires, 28 aircraft from Australian companies have arrived to assist this summer. This collaboration is part of a strong partnership between the two countries.

Pays Air Services and McDermott Aviation have sent 28 firefighting aircraft along with a crew and support staff of over 200 people to Greece. This marks the fifth consecutive fire season that McDermott Aviation has sent helicopters to support Greece.

The Australian aircraft will operate from various bases across Greece, including Athens, Rhodes, Kalamata, Volos, Tripoli, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, and Crete, covering a wide range of areas at risk of wildfires.

Alison Duncan, the Australian Ambassador to Greece, expressed her support on social media, saying it was “great to check out the aircraft and meet some of the crews this week.”

This year’s firefighting efforts also include personnel from the USA, Canada, and other countries. A total of 240 pilots, engineers, and support staff are participating in the missions during Greece’s wildfire season.

The arrival of the Australian aircraft is timely as Greece faces a particularly challenging fire season due to dry conditions.
