Eurostat Report: Population Growth in Greece Slows Amid EU Increase

Greece experienced a slight decline in population, with numbers decreasing by 16,800 people between January 2023 and January 2024, amid an overall increase in the European Union's population, according to recent data from Eurostat.

Following a trend of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU's population grew from 447.6 million to 449.2 million during this period. This growth was driven primarily by net migration gains and increased movements following the pandemic, including an influx of displaced individuals from Ukraine receiving temporary protection status.

Germany, France, and Italy remain the most populous EU countries, accounting for nearly half of the total EU population. While Spain, Germany, and France saw the largest population increases, several countries, including Poland and Hungary, reported declines.

The data was released on World Population Day.
