The deal aims to streamline military logistics amid heightened tensions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which underscored the need for rapid reinforcement capabilities.
The new military mobility corridor will harmonise transport routes among the three NATO and EU member states, reducing peacetime bureaucracy and enhancing emergency response efficiency. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address NATO’s concerns about bureaucratic obstacles hindering troop movements across Europe.
In addition to the mobility corridor, Romania and Bulgaria signed a memorandum to establish a regional special operations command centre. This centre will plan and manage NATO’s special operations forces in the Black Sea region, further bolstering regional security.
The three countries may also connect their ports in the Aegean and Black Seas, complementing existing efforts by Romania and Bulgaria to collaborate with Turkey in defusing stray mines in the Black Sea.
This agreement, signed on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, represents a significant step in enhancing NATO’s operational readiness and military cooperation in Southeastern Europe.
