On Thursday, Cyprus moved one step closer to joining the US Visa Waiver Program as the House of Representatives in Nicosia ratified a key agreement with the United States. The agreement, signed in Washington on June 17, focuses on cooperation and sharing of travel information between the two nations.

This ratification marks a significant step towards Cyprus's potential inclusion in the program, which could be finalized by early 2025 if all agreed-upon deadlines are met. The program simplifies travel between participating countries, allowing eligible individuals to visit for tourism or business purposes without a visa, subject to specific requirements.

The agreement stipulates that the US will provide Cyprus with the necessary software and platform, free of charge, to collect and analyze passenger data. This collaborative approach to information sharing underscores the deepening bilateral ties between the two countries.

The vote in the House saw 22 deputies in favor, one against, and nine abstentions, highlighting the significance of this development for Cyprus. The potential inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program is expected to streamline travel procedures, fostering stronger ties and facilitating easier travel for citizens of both Cyprus and the United States.
