Ahead of the men's Wimbledon final Novak Djokovic revealed tennis rival and friend Nick Kyrgios has told him he will be back in action at the upcoming US Open
London, UK - Novak Djokovic has revealed that Nick Kyrgios is targeting a return to tennis at the US Open, delivering a major boost to the sport and its fans. The news came as Djokovic prepared for his 10th Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, with the Serb ace revealing he'd been practicing with a resurgent Kyrgios.
"He (Kyrgios) hit a really good serve yesterday and said, 'Well, I might come back at the US Open'," Djokovic told reporters, adding playfully, "I don't know if he was joking or not."
Djokovic's comments were far from dismissive, however. He praised Kyrgios' talent and form, revealing the Australian is "hitting the ball as good as ever."
While Kyrgios' serve – hampered by a wrist injury that derailed his Wimbledon hopes – is "close" to full strength, Djokovic believes a full competitive return is imminent. “He's increasing the load, the intensity and the speed," Djokovic explained.
This positive update on Kyrgios' recovery was followed by a heartfelt endorsement from the Serbian champion.
"I hope he can come back, personally, and I think everyone in tennis hopes he can come back quickly because we definitely need him on the tour," Djokovic declared.
The feeling appears mutual, with Kyrgios acknowledging Djokovic's support during his injury layoff. The pair, once fierce rivals, have formed a surprising "bromance" in recent years, a bond evident in their playful practice sessions at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios himself is eager to return to the court, admitting he misses "beating people" and "winning." He aims to give fans "one more year, or two more years, of the Nick Kyrgios experience."
Before the US Open, Kyrgios plans to participate in the fast-paced Ultimate Tennis Showdown in New York, a strategic move to test his fitness and form.
Djokovic believes the sport needs Kyrgios' unique personality and playing style. "He's an extremely important guy for our sport," Djokovic emphasized. "I think he brings new fans."
As Kyrgios edges closer to his return, the tennis world waits with anticipation. His comeback, if successful, promises to inject a much-needed dose of excitement and unpredictability into the men's tour.
