Growth in Greek Regional Airports' Passenger Numbers in First Half of 2024

Fraport's network of airports in Greece reported a significant growth in passenger numbers during the first half of 2024, with a nearly 8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

From January to June, 12,701,048 passengers and 102,195 flights travelled through Greece's 14 regional airports managed by Fraport, marking respective increases of 7.8 per cent and 6.2 per cent. International arrivals rose by 7.8 per cent, and domestic traffic saw a 7.9 per cent increase over the first half of 2023.

Among the airports, Mytilini recorded the highest growth of 14.9 per cent, followed by Rhodes with an 11.9 per cent increase. Thessaloniki Airport led in total passenger numbers with 3.2 million travellers, followed by Rhodes with 2.3 million, Chania with 1.4 million, and Corfu with 1.35 million passengers.

In June 2024 alone, the airports saw 5,279,366 passengers and 39,106 flight movements, representing increases of 5.9 per cent and 4.3 per cent, respectively, compared to June 2023.

For detailed performance, Mykonos experienced a slight decline in June and the first half of the year, while Santorini showed improvement with a 5.4 per cent increase in passenger numbers for the first half of 2024, reaching 1,031,556 travellers.

Santorini performed well, recovering from previous losses and ending the first half of the year with a 5.4% year-to-date increase to 1,031,556 passengers. International traffic remained steady at last year’s level (454,201 passengers), while domestic traffic increased by 10.2% to 577,355 passengers compared to 2023.

In June, the Santorini airport saw a 1.6 per cent increase in total passenger traffic, with 418,862 passengers compared to the previous year. International traffic showed a slight year-to-date increase of 0.9 per cent, with 241,678 passengers, while domestic traffic increased by 2.7 per cent, totalling 177,184 passengers.

Overall, June was a robust month for Fraport's Greek airports, driven by increased international and domestic traffic, reinforcing Greece's position as a popular tourist destination.
