Cyprus’s Defense Minister, Vasilis Palmas, confirmed plans to construct a naval base in Mari during an interview on SPOR FM 95’s “Diaspora News.”
Minister Palmas emphasized the importance of this project in light of Cyprus’s growing geopolitical role, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He stressed the need for infrastructure to support this expanding role.
“We need to demonstrate our advancements with practical results,” said Palmas, highlighting the ability to offer services to friendly nations. He emphasized the project’s priority status and Greece’s support in the form of technical assistance.
While a preliminary study outlining the construction process is awaited, Greece is currently providing technical expertise. Palmas acknowledged the project’s long-term nature, stressing a meticulous approach to ensure Cyprus fulfills its international obligations.
The focus is not on immediate construction, but on a well-planned development that ensures quality and sustainability. This naval base aims to bolster Cyprus’s ability to contribute to regional security and support allied nations.
This news follows yesterday’s reaffirmation by both Cypriot and Greek Defense Ministers of their commitment to maintaining security in the Southern Mediterranean, highlighting their collaborative efforts in the region.
