A remarkable archaeological find occurred when 13-year-old Yair Whitestone stumbled upon an ancient ring while hiking with his father on Mount Khirbet Shalala, near Haifa, Israel. Experts determined that the ring, which dates back nearly 2000 years, features a depiction of the Greek goddess Athena
Yair noticed a small, rusty green object resembling a "bolt" on the side of the trail. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a ring adorned with what appeared to be a warrior figure.
After returning home, Yair's family promptly contacted the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) to report the find. Experts determined that the ring, which dates back nearly 2000 years, features a depiction of the goddess Athena.
Crafted from bronze, the ring is believed to originate from the Late Greco Roman Period, specifically between the second and third centuries AD. Nir Distelfeld, an inspector with the IAA, described the artifact: "This beautifully preserved ring depicts a naked female figure wearing a helmet, holding a shield in one hand and a spear in the other." He noted that Yair's initial identification of the figure as a warrior was remarkably accurate.
Distelfeld further explained that the goddess Athena was immensely popular in the Land of Israel during the Roman period. Roman, and later Byzantine, rule in Israel continued until the Muslim conquests of the 7th century.
The discovery sheds light on the enduring cultural and historical significance of ancient artifacts in the region.
