Greece Battles 52 Forest Fires in 24 Hours, Suspected Arsonist Apprehended

Firefighters in Greece have been battling numerous wildfires across the country in the past 24 hours. While authorities managed to quickly contain 46 fires, six blazes continue to burn as of Friday morning.

One arrest has been made in connection with the fires. A suspect apprehended in Stimaga, Corinth, is believed to have deliberately set fires on agricultural land. The individual is currently in custody and will face charges before the Corinth District Prosecutor.

Two areas, Thermi and Kea Island, presented firefighters with particularly difficult situations.

In Thermi, this fire marks the third blaze in the same area within recent days. Civil Protection sources report that one firefighter experienced respiratory issues and was transported to the Military Hospital 424 with assistance from police.

On Kea Island, a fire erupted in low vegetation at 1:54 pm and quickly intensified due to unfavourable conditions. Firefighters successfully contained the blaze.

While the immediate danger appears to be subsiding, firefighting efforts continue to address the remaining fires.
