Powerful 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off the Coast of Chile

Greek City Times Breaking

Santiago, Chile - A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck off the coast of Antofagasta, Chile on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor hit at 9:51 p.m. local time with an epicenter located approximately 265 kilometers east of the coastal city at a depth of 128 kilometers.

This latest seismic event comes after a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the Tarapaca region of northern Chile in January 2024.

Chile has a long history of powerful earthquakes due to its location on the seismically active "Ring of Fire." This region encircling the Pacific Ocean is known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Some of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded have impacted Chile, including:

  • 1960: The largest earthquake ever recorded (magnitude 9.5) struck near Valdivia, causing widespread devastation.
  • 2010: An 8.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami resulted in the deaths of over 500 people.

A History of Recent Earthquakes in Chile

  • 1965: 7.4 magnitude earthquake in La Ligua (400 fatalities)
  • 1971: 7.5 magnitude earthquake in the Valparaiso region (90 fatalities)
  • 1985: 7.8 magnitude earthquake offshore Valparaiso (177 fatalities)
  • 2005: 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Tarapaca (11 fatalities)
  • 2007: 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Antofagasta (2 fatalities)

Earthquake Preparedness

Living in an earthquake-prone region means being prepared. Here are some crucial steps to take:

  • Develop a family emergency plan: Establish meeting points and communication strategies.
  • Secure your home: Secure heavy objects that could fall and cause injury.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: Include water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, and essential documents.

This latest earthquake serves as a reminder of the powerful forces at play along the Ring of Fire and the importance of earthquake preparedness for those residing in seismically active regions.
