According to Eurostat, 76,695 non-EU citizens applied for international protection in EU countries in April, marking a 12% increase compared to April 2023's 68,535 applicants.
Greece, along with Germany, Spain, and Italy, was among the top recipients of asylum applications. These four countries received 76% of all first-time applicants in the EU. Germany led with 18,585 applications, followed by Spain with 15,430, Italy with 13,485, and France with 10,505. In terms of first-time applicants per capita, Greece recorded a rate of 36 per hundred thousand people, ranking just below Cyprus and Ireland.
The asylum seekers predominantly came from Syria, Venezuela, and Afghanistan. Syrians constituted the largest group with 12,075 first-time applicants, followed by Venezuelans with 6,125 and Afghans with 5,610.
Unaccompanied minors remain a significant concern, with 2,790 applying for asylum in the EU in April 2024. The majority were from Syria (935) and Afghanistan (405). Germany received the highest number of these vulnerable applicants, followed by the Netherlands.
