Greek Police (EL.AS) have launched a special anti-crime operation on Mykonos, the renowned Cyclades Island, in response to escalating concerns over organized crime activities linked to the popular tourist destination.

The operation, which includes searches and inspections, follows a directive from Supreme Court chief prosecutor Georgia Adilini earlier this month to investigate instances of organized crime, including money laundering, protection rackets, homicides, drug dealing, and racketeering associated with the island.

The intensified scrutiny comes in the aftermath of the recent assassination of a 54-year-old land developer and surveyor in the Athens district of Neo Psychiko. The incident, characterized as a gangland-style killing, has resulted in one arrest thus far, indicating a potential contract hit.

Mykonos has risen to prominence as a top Mediterranean summer getaway, drawing a wealthy and celebrity clientele. However, the influx of affluent tourists has also attracted various criminal elements, prompting concerns about the rise of organized crime on the island.
