The Paris prosecutor's office disclosed that an investigation into the charge of gang rape is underway, with the incident reportedly occurring during the night of July 19 to 20, 2024.
Details of the alleged attack began to emerge in French media on Monday, specifying that it took place in the renowned Montmartre nightlife district. According to a police union spokesperson, the woman, described as "young and distressed," sought refuge in a kebab shop around 5 a.m. on Boulevard de Clichy.
The spokesperson indicated that there was a language barrier, as the woman reportedly did not speak French and was unable to provide extensive information about the incident's specifics. However, she did inform investigators that she had been raped by five men. Following the incident, first responders transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In response to the reports, a representative from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) stated that they are prepared to offer assistance. "The Australian Embassy in Paris is making urgent enquiries with French authorities following reports of an Australian citizen being assaulted in Paris," the spokesperson said. "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stands ready to provide consular support."
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities continue to gather evidence.
