Our F-35s ‘may come suddenly one night’ to Ankara: Greek minister

Athens, Greece – Greek Defense Minister Adonis Georgiadis has reignited tensions with neighbouring Turkey by issuing a provocative threat. In a televised statement, Georgiadis suggested that Greece’s newly acquired F-35 fighter jets could be used to strike Turkey “suddenly one night.”

The comments come amid historical animosity and ongoing disputes over airspace, maritime boundaries, and the divided island of Cyprus. While both countries have made recent attempts to de-escalate tensions, the latest rhetoric indicates a fragile peace.

Georgiadis highlighted Greece’s strengthened military capabilities, including the acquisition of F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, as well as frigates. He dismissed Turkey’s military readiness, calling its aircraft outdated. Turkey has responded to similar provocations in the past with its own threats.

The exchange of verbal attacks follows the 50th anniversary of Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus, an event that continues to cast a long shadow over relations between the two countries.

Despite the heated rhetoric, both Greece and Turkey have engaged in diplomatic efforts to improve ties. However, the recent escalation of tensions raises concerns about the potential for further instability in the region.
