A search for a missing 26-year-old Nepalese man concluded tragically today with the discovery of his body in Lake Evrotas, Sparta.
The man, who worked as a farm labourer in the area, had been missing since Sunday morning when he went fishing on Lake Vivari in the Municipality of Evrotas. His two roommates reported him missing later that day after he failed to return.
A search operation involving the Fire Brigade, a team of divers from the 1st EMAK and OSEA of the Peloponnese PEPYD, and volunteers from the Evrotas Fire Station commenced on Sunday afternoon. The search was hampered by murky water with limited visibility. It was interrupted late Monday afternoon but resumed at daybreak on Tuesday with additional personnel.
According to Laconian Press, the search focused on the area indicated by the roommates, who reported seeing the man fall into the water from his makeshift fishing boat.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of death. An investigation is underway.
