Kakoulakis, who was on holiday with his family, suffered severe injuries including a broken nose, jaw, and a tracheotomy, after allegedly making a remark about a cigarette burn. The incident has been widely condemned, with many questioning the lack of arrests despite the availability of video evidence.
The images of Kakoulakis, shared by his family, show him post-surgery at Venizelio Hospital. The assault has drawn international attention, with the Canadian Ambassador visiting him in the hospital. Icelandic authorities have also expressed concern, given Kakoulakis' wife is from Iceland.
Despite identifying at least two suspects, local authorities have not made any arrests.
This incident, alongside a recent attack on a 16-year-old boy in Anogia, has intensified scrutiny on the handling of such violent acts in Crete. The Mayor of Anogia has called for a community discussion on August 20 to address ongoing issues of delinquency.
The victim’s family lawyer emphasised their commitment to seeking justice and setting a precedent against such behaviour. Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, has also issued a statement of concern, highlighting the severity of the incident.
