Deputy Minister of National Defence Hosts World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association Delegation

On Tuesday, Deputy Minister of National Defence Ioannis Kefalogiannis held a meeting with a delegation from the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA) at the Ministry of National Defence.

General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, also participated in the discussions.

The meeting centred on significant geopolitical developments and Greek national interests. Kefalogiannis commended the WHIA for its pivotal role in fortifying connections between Greece and its diaspora, advancing national interests, and increasing global awareness of critical issues facing Greece.

Key topics included the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, North Macedonia’s alleged breach of the Prespa Agreement, and regional tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

Regarding Greece-Turkey relations, Kefalogiannis noted a shift towards a calmer atmosphere following recent tensions in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, which had been exacerbated by Turkish actions, rhetoric, and threats. He highlighted that since the commencement of bilateral dialogue between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the foreign ministers of both countries have agreed on a roadmap for future engagements. This roadmap encompasses a range of discussions, including political dialogue, confidence-building measures through Defence Ministries, and collaborative efforts on tourism, investment, agriculture, trade, maritime affairs, and climate change.
