In his remarks, Archbishop Elpidophoros emphasized the significance of the day, commemorating the tragic invasion that continues to cast a shadow over Cyprus. He spoke passionately about the need for justice, equity, and a peaceful reunification of the island nation.
"We gather here today not only to pray and worship but also to remember the dark day when our precious Cyprus was invaded by forces of division and destruction," Archbishop Elpidophoros declared before the assembled faithful. "On this fiftieth anniversary, we pray for the eternal rest of those who perished and whose memory we honour with this memorial."
Drawing from scripture, Archbishop Elpidophoros invoked the words of Revelation, highlighting the cries for justice from those who have suffered: "How long, O Master, Holy and True, until You judge those who dwell on earth and vindicate our blood?"
Expressing determination for a unified Cyprus, Archbishop Elpidophoros condemned the decades-long occupation of the island's northern third and called for international action to restore peace. "Cyprus will be whole again, and free again, and united as the one nation that it has always been," he affirmed.
Reflecting on the enduring pain caused by the invasion, Archbishop Elpidophoros urged steadfast remembrance and commitment to the cause of peace. "We will not stand by and allow Cyprus to bleed forever," he vowed.
As the memorial concluded, Archbishop Elpidophoros called upon the congregation to pray fervently and work tirelessly towards achieving a united Cyprus. "Let us remember with love and commit with strength so that the dream of a united Cyprus may become a shining reality," he concluded.
The solemn service underscored Archbishop Elpidophoros' unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and the memory of those lost to conflict. His remarks resonated deeply with those present, reaffirming the enduring hope for reconciliation and unity in Cyprus.
