THI's Summer Youth Academy Transforms Lives Through Basketball

Celebrity Game Launches Exciting Program for Greek Youth

Athens, July 23, 2024 - The inaugural Summer Youth Academy, hosted by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) at the Lycée Léonin Athens school, kicked off with a thrilling Celebrity Game that marked the beginning of a transformative journey for 120 Greek teenagers aged 14-18. This pioneering initiative combines intensive basketball training with educational and character-building activities, aiming to empower youth and foster leadership skills.

The Academy, a collaborative effort between THI and Eurohoops, an Athens-based organization dedicated to youth empowerment through sports, opened its doors this July with enthusiastic participation from prominent Greek athletes, business leaders, and artists. From 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, participants engage not only in honing their basketball skills but also in developing crucial life skills such as teamwork, empathy, and self-confidence.

"This initiative is about more than just basketball; it's about shaping well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to their communities," said Michael Printzos, THI Country Head, Greece. "Through sports, we aim to instil values that transcend the game and promote unity."

The Summer Youth Academy received significant support from various sponsors, including Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Wizards and esteemed member of THI's Board, who serves as the honorary Chair and presenting sponsor. Gold sponsors include THI and the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, with additional support from the John S. Latsis Foundation and Sprite as Silver sponsors, and Pet City, Metropolitan College/AKMI, and Folloe Foundation as Bronze sponsors.

"We are proud to launch this initiative, which exemplifies THI's commitment to investing in Greece's future through youth development," remarked George P. Stamas, THI Board President. "By providing opportunities like the Summer Youth Academy, we are nurturing the next generation of leaders who will drive positive change in their communities."

The Academy also enjoys collaboration with esteemed institutions such as the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Hellenic Olympians Association, and the Hellenic Basketball Federation, underscoring its role in promoting sports excellence and community engagement.
