Strange diagonal grooves found on the fingertips and toes of one mummy, known as 'María,' have sparked worldwide debate. These most recent findings have been brought to light in an article published on DailyMail.com by Matthew Phelan, the publication's Senior Science Reporter.
Joshua McDowell, a former Colorado prosecutor and current defence attorney, examined María with the help of three independent forensic medical examiners from the United States. He told DailyMail.com, “These were not traditional human fingerprint patterns. We did not see any loops or whorls on the prints of the fingers or on the toes.”
Fingerprint analysis, or 'friction ridge' skin impressions, has been a forensic tool since 300 BC in China and systematised in the US since 1902. However, María's fingerprints didn't match any known human pattern. McDowell, with extensive experience in fingerprint analysis, confirmed the uniqueness of these patterns.
María, one of over half-a-dozen 'alien' mummies brought to light by UFO researcher Jaime Maussan, was discovered covered in diatomaceous earth—a powdery fossil residue from plankton. McDowell noted, “Much of her body is covered in diatomaceous earth. However, on the fingers that were exposed, the epidermal ridges I saw appeared to be in mostly straight lines.”
Whilst acknowledging the oddity of the straight ridge patterns, McDowell and his team still stress the need for caution in drawing conclusions. “It could possibly have something to do with the way her skin was preserved,” McDowell admitted.
The investigation into the mummies is ongoing. McDowell brought a team of experts to Peru, including a city coroner from Denver, a forensic anthropologist from Maryland, and his father, Dr. John McDowell, a forensic odontologist who identified victims of the 9/11 attacks. Despite their efforts, no definitive determination about the nature of the specimens has been made.
The team's work continues as they seek to uncover the true nature of these 'alien' mummies. McDowell stated, “I've been to Mexico a couple of times, spent a week in Peru. Two to three hours a day, I'm dealing with something on this.”
The mysterious origins and unusual characteristics of these remains continue to intrigue researchers and the public, leaving many questions yet to be answered.
