Maria Sakkari made a notable entrance at this year's Olympic Games, proudly representing Greece as part of the first boat in the flotilla that kicked off the event.
“I think we know how difficult the first rounds are with as much tennis as we've seen. The Olympics are a little different. I was very nervous, we are representing our country. The atmosphere was amazing, the weather was kind to us and the premiere was perfect. We continue, we want to stay here as long as possible. There's a goal in the back of my mind and that's where I want to focus. It's a very difficult tournament, but I'll listen to my heart and... we'll go strong. I've noticed that when I look down on the dashboard it doesn't work too well, so I've turned it around a bit. I watch match by match. I have an idea who's on my side, but I don't want to think about it. I have both mixed and doubles, which need a separate concentration. I'm fine, I'm very happy to live this experience again, I appreciate and enjoy it, it's something very special that no one can describe if they don't experience it," said Sakkari.
Maria Sakkari prevailed 6-0, 6-1 over Danka Kovinic from Montenegro and easily qualified for the round of 32 of the Olympic Games in Paris.
