FM Gerapetritis: Greece Stands Firm Against Turkish Claims

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has affirmed that Greece neither recognises nor will recognise Turkish claims, following recent events in the southeastern Aegean.

In an interview with "Parapolitika," Gerapetritis addressed the inaccuracies circulating about the July 22 maritime site-survey operation for an underwater power cable between Crete and Cyprus.

The Italian vessel conducted its survey within the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as delineated by the agreement between Greece and Egypt. Turkey, however, asserts rights over the same area based on the disputed Turkish-Libyan memorandum. This led to Turkish warships entering the broader region.

Gerapetritis clarified that there was no risk of a "hot incident" despite the presence of Greek and Turkish forces. Established communication channels between the two countries effectively managed the situation, allowing the research vessel to complete its survey in under 36 hours as planned, with operations within the Greek EEZ lasting approximately five hours.

"Neither country has deviated from its fundamental positions," Gerapetritis stated. "Greece remains steadfast in not recognising Turkish claims, taking all necessary actions as provided by International Law." He emphasised the importance of direct communication to prevent tensions from escalating into real crises, underscoring the need for discussions on the full delimitation of the continental shelf and the EEZ, guided by the International Law of the Sea. Gerapetritis concluded by expressing Greece's commitment to long-lasting and sustainable peace, highlighting the nation's significant power on all levels.
