The regional authority of Attica has allocated €48 million to boost its cultural tourism sector, aiming to attract visitors interested in unique thematic experiences. This substantial funding will be managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture through a public bidding process, which will oversee various projects aimed at enriching the region's tourism offerings.
Governor Nikos Hardalias announced this investment during an event with Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. He highlighted that Attica aspires to become a premier destination for culture and history enthusiasts. While €40 million has already been approved, Hardalias emphasized that the total funding will ultimately reach €48 million. The initiative focuses on promoting the monuments and natural beauty of Athens and the broader Attica region to draw tourists seeking enriching cultural experiences.
The funding derives from the Integrated Spatial Investments for Culture, part of the Attica 2021-2027 Operational Program. Minister Mendoni underscored the critical role of culture in societal development and economic opportunity, citing a recent study that found every euro invested in culture generates a return of €3.44 within five years.
To access this funding, the culture ministry must submit a detailed investment plan to the regional authority by January 17, 2025. Subsequently, the ministry will review and evaluate project proposals for funding.
During the event, the Managing Authority of the Region of Attica also signed an agreement with the Museum of Modern Greek Culture (MNEP). This partnership will include the creation of specialized educational materials, such as a “Treasure Hunting in the Museum” kit designed for children aged 10 to 12.
